Happy Halloween

Background:

The history of Halloween goes back more than 2,000 years. The earliest celebrations of Halloween were among the Celtic people who lived in the areas which are now Great Britain and Northern France.

The Celts were people who worshiped the beauty of nature. They worshiped a Sun God and believed that without him, they would not live. They also worshipped Samhain who was the lord of the dead and of the cold, dark winter season. They believed that on October 31 Samhain would call together all of the dead and these souls would take on the shape of an animal. They believed that all creatures wandered the Earth on that night. This was called the Vigil of Samhain.

The Druids, which were the priests of the Celtic people, would build fires on the hilltops in belief that the large fires would help to strengthen the Sun God, and give him power enough to overcome the lord of darkness so that the sun season could continue. They believed that the fires were sacred, therefore they burned dried crops and sacrificed animals to help strengthen the Sun God. At midnight they stop worshipping the Sun God and start to worship Samhain because he will be the ruler for the next six months. This is the starting of the new year. They perform ceremonies through the night to ask the spirits to tell the future of the upcoming year. In the morning each household receives an ember from the fire, this ember is used to start fires in their own homes with the belief that it will ward off evil spirits in the new year.

The Celts continued with their ceremonies until they were conquered by the Roman Catholics. The Roman Catholics brought with them their own customs and traditions. They had established All Saints Day or All Hallows Day on November 1. This was a day in which all saints who did not have their own declared holiday were honored. The church had hoped that by establishing this holiday, it would do away with the Vigil of Samhain and the other ceremonies and celebrations held on October 31 through November 1. But this was not so. Soon witchcraft came about, and October 31 was renamed Night of the Witch. It was believed that the devil and all of his followers (demons, witches) would come out on this night to perform unholy acts to make a mockery of the All Hallows Day celebration. These ceremonies and celebrations continued and October 31 was then called All Hallows Even. It was a night for superstitious beliefs and mystery. Through the years the name was shortened to Hallowe'en and then to Halloween.

Upuan lyrics

Kayo po na naka upo,
Subukan nyo namang tumayo
At baka matanaw, at baka matanaw na nyo
Ang tunay na kalagayan ko

Ganito kasi yan eh...

Verse 1:

Chorus:

Kayo po na naka upo,
Subukan nyo namang tumayo,
At baka matanaw, at baka matanaw na nyo
Ang tunay na kalagayan ko

Verse 2:

Kaya...

Wag kang masyadong halata
Bato-bato sa langit
Ang matamaa'y wag magalit
O bato-bato bato sa langit
Ang matamaan ay
Wag masyadong halata
Wag kang masyadong halata
Hehey, (Wag kang masyadong halata)
(Wag kang masyadong halata)

Kaleidoscope World by Francis M.

Kaleidoscope World

So many faces, so many races
Different voices, different choices
Some are mad, while others laugh
Some live alone with no better half
Others grieve while others curse
And others mourn behind a big black hearse
Some are pure and some half-bred
Some are sober and some are wasted
Some are rich because of fate and
Some are poor with no food on their plate
Some stand out while others blend
Some are fat and stout while some are thin
Some are friends and some are foes
Some have some while some have most

Every color and every hue
Is represented by me and you
Take a slide in the slope
Take a look in the kaleidoscope
Spinnin' round, make it twirl
In this kaleidoscope world

Some are great and some are few
Others lie while some tell the truth
Some say poems and some do sing
Others sing through their guitar strings
Some know it all while some act dumb
Let the bassline strum to the bang of the drum
Some can swim while some will sink
And some will find their minds and think
Others walk while others run
You can't talk peace and have a gun
Some are hurt and start to cry
Don't ask me how don't ask me why
Some are friends and some are foes
Some have some while some have most

Every color and every hue
Is represented by me and you
Take a slide in the slope
Take a look in the kaleidoscope
Spinnin' round, make it twirl
In this kaleidoscope world

Facebook beats Google for visitors

SAN FRANCISCO - Social-networking star Facebook surpassed Google to become the most visited website in the United States for the first time last week, industry analysts showed.

Facebook's homepage finished the week ending March 13 as the most visited site in the country, according to industry tracker Hitwise.

The “important milestone,” as described by Hitwise director of research Heather Dougherty, came as Facebook enjoyed a massive 185 percent increase in visits in the same period, compared to the same week in 2009.

By comparison, visits to search engine home Google.com increased only nine percent in the same time -- although the tracker does not include Google property sites such as the popular Gmail email service, YouTube and Google Maps.

Taken together, Facebook.com and Google.com amounted to 14 percent of the entire US Internet visits last week, Dougherty said.

Google has been positioning challenges in recent months to Facebook and the micro-blogging site Twitter by adding the social-networking feature Buzz to its Gmail service.

In what could signal an escalating battle between Facebook and Google, the leading social-networking service celebrated its sixth birthday earlier this year with changes including a new message inbox that echoes Gmail's format.

Facebook boasts some 400 million users while Gmail had 176 million unique visitors in December, according to tracking firm comScore.

Manny Pacquiao Won Over Joshua Clottey in a Unanimous Decision

March 13, 2010

Filipino boxing superstar retained his WBO welterweight crown by beating Joshua Clottey of Ghana via a 12-round unanimous decision.
All judges scored the fight in favor of Manny Pacquiao in what boxing fans say was a lopsided fight. Only one round was awarded to Clottey by one of the judges. The rest of the rounds were given to Pacquiao.
Clottey was pre-occupied with his hand and shoulder defense to neutralize Pacquiao's rapid and powerful punches.

Pacquaio was not able to score a knock down as the boxer from Ghana continued to fortify his defense to evade Pacquiao's rapid assault.
Clottey's trainer and coach Lenny de Jesus was prodding Clottey to take his chances in the middle of the 12-round bout after observing that Clottey was not actively engaging Pacquiao.

You gotta take a chance," Clottey's trainer, Lenny DeJesus, implored him after the sixth round. "You're in a fight and you gotta start taking chances."
The fight wasn't close, and it was never in doubt. It was so one-sided that those in the cheap seats among the crowd of 50,994 could tell without even looking at the giant video screens over the ring that Pacquiao was in total command.
He's a very tough opponent," Pacquiao said. "He was looking for a big shot."
Pacquiao is scheduled to hold a concert for his fans in Texas after his successful defense of this WBO welterweight crown.

Mabuhay ka Manny Pacquiao and thank you again for making us proud to be Pinoy! You know..:-)

A Happy Cream Puff Story

Do you remember the last time you tasted something that made you say “Oh! I feel so Happy! This is what I really wanted!” That is the kind of feeling that Happy Cream Puff seeks to share in everyone who tasted their new kind of dessert ,profiterole or simply known as Cream Puff, which is a light puffy pastry that is filled with either custard cream or whipped cream. Truly a fresh way to eat becauseHappy Cream Puff offers the right amount of sweetness that keeps you wanting for more bites, definitely no more “suya taste” every time you crave for sweets.

The thought of putting up a food business to the couple was not a neophyte experience since they already have a food restaurant being managed in the busy streets of Calamba, Laguna. This Happy Cream Puff story all started when the family went to Japan for a vacation. Mrs. Yamagishi was first introduced to this palatable pastry upon visiting various food establishments in the key cities of Japan and was overwhelmed by the cream puff enthusiasm of the Japanese people despite its English origin. Prompted by its unique fresh subtle taste and the noble idea of sharing the Happy Cream Puff experience to her beloved kababayans, Mrs. Yamagishi decided to get into baking and introduced this “puff wonder” to their own restaurant as a flavorsome dessert and as expected without any doubt receives good response from their customers and loyal patrons.

The first Happy Cream Puff experience was first shared officially at Alabang Metropolis Mall and few months later was transferred to SM South Mall to accommodate its increasing demand for space. Now business has been good for the family, and in order to bring their business to a higher level, they have decided to look for a more recognized space at the heart of the business district and considered “The Zone” which is strategically situated in Bel Air, Makati. Since then eating cream puff has never been the same again and because of the exceptional demand and acceptance from the people it soon paved the way to opening it’s another branch now at “Rada Regency” located in Legazpi Village, Makati.

Happy Cream Puff trademark product is made up of a choux pastry shell filled with custard cream or whipped cream and piped in only as you order, adhering to their motto of “Always Pippin Fresh” which is the very groundwork of this simple yet sophisticated pastry shop. So if you are eating with your friends or family and want to impress them with a new kind of dessert which is not too much on sweets. This is the perfect place for you. Feb. 10, 2010 Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday

"Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall return." Ash Wednesday Today!

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption.

Why we receive the ashes?
Following the example of the Nine vites, who did penance in sackcloth and ashes, our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble our hearts and reminds us that life passes away on Earth. We remember this when we are told
"Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall return."
Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice.

The distribution of ashes comes from a ceremony of ages past. Christians who had committed grave faults performed public penance. On Ash Wednesday, the Bishop blessed the hair shirts which they were to wear during the forty days of penance, and sprinkled over them ashes made from the palms from the previous year. Then, while the faithful recited the Seven Penitential Psalms, the penitents were turned out of the church because of their sins -- just as Adam, the first man, was turned out of Paradise because of his disobedience. The penitents did not enter the church again until Maundy Thursday after having won reconciliation by the toil of forty days' penance and sacramental absolution. Later, all Christians, whether public or secret penitents, came to receive ashes out of devotion. In earlier times, the distribution of ashes was followed by a penitential procession.

The Ashes
The ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine mercy is of utmost importance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy during the entire Lenten season with reflection, prayer and penance.

MTV Has A New Logo, No More Music

MTV recently launched their new logo and I have to say, it's very honest. They have dumped "Music Television" from underneath the logo--a phrase that made M-T-V what it is literally for 30 years. But no longer. Full of reality shows, gag shows, and looks at celebrity homes, MTV has ceased to be your number one source for music on television.

According to the press release:

It represents a new visually defined MTV, stimulating its past, present and future and embracing it’s diversity. Everything from Jersey Shore, to the VMAs to collaborations with the MoMA. The logo is part of MTV’s re-invention to connect with today’s millennial generation and bring them in as part of the channel.

S.Korea orders lights out to boost birthrate AFP - Thursday, January 21

SEOUL (AFP) - – South Korea's health ministry, which is charged with boosting the nation's low birthrate, is turning off the lights in its offices once a month to encourage staff to go home early and make more babies.

The ministry said in a statement Wednesday the switches will be flicked at 7.30 pm every third Wednesday in the month to "help staff get dedicated to childbirth and upbringing".

Those with urgent duties will be exempt from the switch-off.

"Going home early may have no direct link to having more kids, but you cannot just completely rule out a possible link between them," Choi Jin-Sun, who is in charge if the project at the ministry, told AFP.

Low birthrate is a pressing issue in this fast-ageing society.

South Korea's birthrate -- the average number of babies born during a woman's lifetime -- remained near the world's lowest at 1.19 in 2008 and there are fears the population will begin shrinking within a decade.

"It won't be too long before our children are burdened with supporting the elderly," Health Minister Jeon Jae-Hee told the Korea Times newspaper.

"Korea may lose out in the global economic competition due to a lack of manpower. It is actually the most urgent and important issue the country is facing."

Married staff at the ministry are not doing their bit, with an average of 1.63 children compared to the average of 1.82 among all civil servants. The ministry aims to increase the figure to 2.0 in two years.

The ministry has various other incentives, including cash gifts, for staff who produce more than two babies. Some local governments also run schemes or even matchmaking services to boost the birthrate.
